Some copywriting I did as part of a project to encourage supporters of the National Kidney Foundation of Singapore to donate property, before they pass away, outlining the many benefits.

Pledge Your Heart Today (Long Version)

What is Planned Giving?

Imagine that there was a way where you could help every man, woman and child suffering from disease to live a healthier and happier life. A new chance to live life to the fullest because of one small decision on your part.

A decision called Planned Giving (or Legacy Giving) allows you to do your bit for charity with your the proceeds of your insurance policies. By allocating a portion of your policy returns to your preferred charity, you can ensure that your it will be put to good use in a meaningful way.

Importance of Planned Giving

People express their feelings in a multitude of ways. After all, every one of us is unique, in life no two people are alike, and yet we can say that there are those who nature has blessed with good health and wealth, and others who suffer from chronic illnesses, many of them helpless children.

Philanthropy is known to aid those who need help the most; the poor, the unfortunate and the chronically sick. It allows charitable organisations to work towards a better society by combating illness and despair. But to do this, they need the resources to succeed, and one of the ways they do this is through donations from the public.

As an individual, planned giving is a way to make merit and to make a difference. It also provides immense satisfaction from the knowledge that your generosity has contributed to the betterment of those who are in need.
Planned giving is important to the cultural development of Singapore. If we hope to be a more gracious society and be recognised as a first world city, we must ensure that altruism and philanthropies are values which reflected by our actions.

Personal Benefits of Planned Legacy Giving

Planned Giving is effective and convenient to execute.

PLANNED GIVING is an effective and convenient way of benefiting your favourite charity , depending on whichever cause you believe in. Feel the sense of satisfaction and realise your long cherished dreams of giving back to the community, by helping the needy. By nominating a charity as your beneficiary in your Insurance or CPF nominations in a Will, proceeds will go into improving the lot of the under-privileged in the event of your untimely demise.

PLANNED GIVING is exempted from probate taxation. This means that you are relieved of the burden of having your estate taxed by the government.

PLANNED GIVING affords you privacy and discretion in resolving your financial and domestic matters. It involves the family in the wonderful endeavor of altruism.

PLANNED GIVING allows you to nominate your favourite charities to benefit from your assets, thereby furthering the development of society. If no such will is made, your assets will be distributed according to the wishes of the government!

Most importantly, PLANNED GIVING is easy and inexpensive to do.

How Do I Do It?

Perhaps you already have a charity in mind, if not, take a look at those causes dear to you and decide. There are many to choose from. For example, the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) is a charitable organisation committed to relieving the financial burden of those with life-threatening illnesses and their families, that you can lend a helping hand to.

Notify your NTUC agent that you would like to nominate your favourite charitable organisation as the beneficiary of your policy, or perhaps even your CPF savings or shares of an approved corporation (e.g. Singtel). This can be done with a form available at any of the CPF regional office. Call 1800-227-1188 for more details. Two witnesses must be present with the donor.

Your will should be amended by a lawyer to nominate the charity as the beneficiary of your assets, to ensure that your wishes are fulfilled. If you don’t already have a Will, your NTUC agent can help you in preparing one.
Planned Giving is a form of Charity jointly advocated by both NTUC Income www.income.com.sg and the National Kidney Foundation www.nkfs.org. If you would like more information on Planned Legacy Giving, contact the NKF Hotline at (65) 6250 1555,or email wishfund@nkfs.org.sg

The Importance of a Will

A Will is an indispensable component of a modern financial plan. Previously thought to be inauspicious by the Chinese, it is now standard practice to include a Will in your financial planning strategies.

Why is it important? A Will allows you to exercise your rights in having complete control of how you want your assets to be distributed. If a Will is not made before a person’s death, the state takes control and allocates your assets as it deems fit. This often does not take special provisions into consideration. For instance, you may wish to leave more money for a disabled or less privileged kin or continue your support for charitable causes.

These are special provisions that can only be addressed if a Will has been drawn.

Without a Will, the court will likely appoint a complete stranger such as a lawyer you have never met to manage your assets. This is impersonal and probably unsatisfactory and disagreeable. Taking matters into your own hands is the way to go!

A Will gives you the power to create a special trust fund for a kin who specially needs it (e.g disabled relative, under aged children, elderly parents). The trust will properly ensure the well being of your loved one for his or her lifetime or for a stipulated period. This is one of the most powerful instruments of love you can wield, the assurance that your loved ones will be properly cared for under all circumstances.

A Will also allows you to continue showing your support to the causes you champion in your lifetime. Your commitment and sincerity will live on in posterity long after you pass on.

All bequests to charitable organisations in Wills are exempted from probate taxation in Singapore. You can allot a portion of your assets to further your preferred cause and better the lot of the less fortunate, at the same time save yourself from paying estate duties which go into the government’s coffers.
We would be pleased to discuss with you or your financial planners how a gift to the charity in your Will can be an important part of your plan and benefit the society meaningfully. For more information, please contact XX, NTUC’s Planned Giving Co-ordinator, toll-free at 1800-XXX XXXX.
